Brushing & Flossing during Orthodontic Treatment

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is one of the most important parts of orthodontic treatment. Braces and aligners can make it easier for food and plaque to accumulate around the teeth, so consistent brushing and flossing is essential. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that can lead to cavities, gum inflammation, and permanent white spot lesions if not properly removed. With good daily habits, these issues are highly preventable, and patients can finish treatment with both a straight and healthy smile.

Brushing your Teeth

Use a soft-bristled or electric toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste. Brush slowly using small circular motions, making sure to clean around brackets, along the gum line, and between all teeth.

Brush at least three times daily:

Be sure to brush all surfaces:

  • Outer surfaces

  • Inner surfaces

  • Chewing surfaces

  • Around brackets and wires

  • Your tongue

Before bed

Take your time, thorough brushing should take several minutes.

Flossing with Braces

Flossing is essential for removing plaque between teeth where a toothbrush cannot reach. Because braces include wires, floss threaders or orthodontic floss picks are required.

Steps on how to floss:

  • Thread floss under the wire using a floss threader

  • Gently slide floss between teeth

  • Move floss up and down each side of the tooth

  • Clean slightly under the gum line

  • Repeat for every tooth

Daily flossing significantly reduces the risk of gum disease and decay during treatment.
